Workshop on 30 March 2019 – A hitchhiker’s guide to bringing the ‘intercultural’ into the classroom with Mandy Welfare

Nowadays, it’s hard to leave the house without having an intercultural encounter. Low-cost flights and holidays mean more and more people are spending time abroad in international settings, and living in Berlin means being confronted with a myriad of cultures whether on the street, at work or virtually. So to what extent should we as English teachers be incorporating intercultural competence training into our classes? What is our role as teachers? How can we bring the je ne sais quoi of the ‘intercultural’ into our classes?

These are just some of the questions we’ll be exploring together in this workshop. Furthermore, we’ll look at some strategies and activities to encourage intercultural learning in both general and business English classes, and also discuss the main attitudes and skills which make up intercultural competence and explore how they fit into learning a language.

Bio: Mandy Welfare is a Berlin-based business English and multi-cultural communications trainer who has delivered training in Finland, Spain and across Germany. She’s a Cornelsen and Hueber author and is due to finish a Masters of Education in 2019. She’s also an active member of Eltabb!
