Workshop title: What can corpora tell us about vocabulary?
In this workshop, we will look at various types of statistical output from corpora to see what we can learn about the vocabulary of English and how we might apply this in teaching. We will seek answers to the following questions: How many different words are in general circulation? How many words do we need for day-to-day communication? What differences are there between written vocabulary and spoken vocabulary? What can we learn about multi-word expressions from corpora? What can we learn about special vocabulary such as business or academic vocabulary? What should our priorities be in teaching?
Bio:
Michael McCarthy is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, Adjunct Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Limerick, Ireland and Visiting Professor at Newcastle University. He is the (co-)author and (co-)editor of 50 books and more than 100 academic articles, including the Cambridge Grammar of English, English Grammar Today, From Corpus to Classroom, various titles in the Vocabulary in Use series, Touchstone, Viewpoint and, most recently, Grammar and Usage: Your Questions Answered and 101 Tips for Language Learners.
The Annual General Meeting from 1:45pm is open to all members and is a presentation/discussion about all things ELTABB including progress over the last 12 months and plans moving forward. You can take part in discussions about membership, funding, workshops, the online forum and more.
Additionally, this year there will be many changes in the board so it is the chance for members to vote on the new board members.
The positions on the board that are changing are:
Chair, Treasurer, Events Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, Social Media Coordinator and Professional Development Coordinator.
You the members are the ones that keep this organisation alive so make sure you’re there to have your say. We look forward to having loads of bums on seats!
