ELTABB EVENT (IN-PERSON/HYBRID) on 8 October 2022: “English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) at German Universities: Cultural Implications and Opportunities” with Vicky Allan

Hi everyone,

We are delighted to announce that our own Vicky Allan is giving a workshop in October! This one will be in-person/hybrid.

Workshop Summary:
Every year, universities all over Europe add more and more English-taught courses to their degree programs. This presents an interesting and often untapped opportunity for English teachers, as administrative and teaching staff will typically need linguistic support in order to “switch” to English and best support their international student body.

In this workshop, I’ll give an overview of EMI in Germany from my perspective and we will discuss the intercultural, linguistic, and pedagogical needs of professors and teaching staff when teaching in English. This will give us an opportunity to look at how our culture shapes things like teacher talk, classroom management expectations, and teacher-student interaction.

About Vicky:

Wiktoria Allan has been teaching English at universities in the Berlin / Brandenburg area since 2015. She is currently employed at the Technische Hochschule Wildau, where she is responsible for teaching and supporting students, professors, lecturers, and other staff members. In January 2023, Wiktoria will be taking up her PhD studies in Linguistics at Lancaster University.
